What to expect
From discomfort, to irritation, to self-esteem issues, there are many reasons why women choose to have labiaplasty. While every vulva is different, protruding lips, excess skin or unevenness can affect women’s lives, both physically and emotionally.
This procedure focuses on reducing or reshaping the inner vaginal lips (labia minora) or the outer vaginal lips (labia majora) to give you a shape you’re comfortable with. Call us today to see how we can help you get the results you desire.
Your Questions Answered
Labiaplasty is the surgical removal of excess or uneven labia, the fleshy flaps of skin within the vulva, to create a more acceptable shape. It is usually done on the inner lips, but it can also be done on the outer lips. Many women are born with large or uneven labia, while it happens to others after childbirth, due to ageing, or weight reduction. This is very common as we find women feel they need this surgery rather than simply wanting to have it done. This minor procedure is done under local anaesthetic.
Most ladies request labia reduction surgery because they are not satisfied with the larger size of their inner lips (labia minora), which often protrude outside the outer lips (labia majora). They may find this embarrassing, especially if it is noticeable when wearing tight underwear, sports clothes or swimsuits
For others, the excess skin protrusion causes constant irritation when wearing tight pants or jeans or discomfort when engaging in sports or other physical activities.
Some ladies may find the size or unevenness of their labia embarrassing or it might get in the way during sexual intercourse.
Yes, you must be at least 18 years old.
This largely depends on the extent of the procedure, but the labiaplasty surgery typically takes one to two hours to perform. This is a day case procedure so there is no overnight stay required.
All labiaplasty procedures will be performed by a Consultant Plastic Surgeon.
Labiaplasty procedures are performed in our own private, purpose built, multi-disciplinary surgery and aftercare facility. We have access to the very latest equipment and techniques in the cosmetic surgery industry.
All of our labiaplasty procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic.
After your initial consultation you will have a pre-operative assessment with our experienced and dedicated nurse in charge of pre-operative care. Following your surgery, you will have two separate appointments with our specialist post-op nurse, and then a six week check-up with your cosmetic surgeon. Review appointments will be required at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months.
Labiaplasty is generally a very low risk procedure. As with any surgery, complications can potentially arise, although this is very rare in labiaplasty. The most common post-op risks for this procedure include infection, hematoma, and minor scarring. These complications occur infrequently and they are easily treated.
There are many benefits associated with this procedure including increased self-esteem and self- confidence, enhanced sexual experience, and improved comfort in your day to day life.
You may return to work 4-5 days after your surgery. It is recommended that you refrain from using tampons, wearing tight clothing, and abstain from sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks after your surgery in order to allow the wound to heal.
When you are discharged from the clinic you will receive a prescription for painkillers and antibiotics, which you will need to take as instructed by your surgeon. It is important to keep the vaginal area clean as it heals from the surgery so you will be required to gently cleanse the area on a daily basis. You may also be required to wear a sanitary towel or panty liner in the weeks following the procedure to soak up any light bleeding or discharge.
